Advisement of Ban on Powdered Disposable Gloves for Medical Applications

Jan 04, 2017 • PRESS RELEASES

LATHAM, NY – January 4, 2017 – On December 19, 2016, the FDA published the final rule to ban powdered surgical gloves and powdered patient examination gloves used for medical applications. The FDA ruled these products present unreasonable and substantial risk to health care providers, patients and other individuals. While medical disposable gloves play a significant role in protecting patients and healthcare personnel, exposure has been found to cause adverse allergic reactions to some individuals.

In response to this FDA ban, Protective Industrial Products, a leader in hand protection, will discontinue and/or relabel powdered disposable gloves to help ensure that they are no longer sold or used in medical applications. During this rolling change, we are encouraging all of our valued distributors to advise customers of this ban on powdered surgical and examination gloves in medical applications. It is important to reiterate and clarify that ban covers only powdered surgical gloves and powdered patient examination gloves used in medical applications only.

We further advise distributors currently holding any stock of powdered examination gloves to redirect these products for industrial and food (non-medical) applications.
